Approximately 2 billion euros in production value, over 500 million euros in gross value added, and a workforce exceeding 10,000 direct and indirect employees. These figures, confirming the strategic importance of shipbuilding and naval repairs across the ports of the Western Ligurian Sea, were presented in Genoa on Friday 16 October during the launch of the first report by the Observatory established by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, Confindustria Genova, and the Industrial Association of the Province of Savona.
The study, which surveyed 87 companies, highlights a sector vital to Italy's maritime competitiveness on the international stage. Leading the supply chain is the Genoa hub, where production value reached 1.9 billion euros in 2024, consolidating growth relative to 2021 through sustained investment in technology and human capital.
The event was attended by institutional representatives and maritime industry leaders, including Ferdinando Garré (Chairman of San Giorgio del Porto), Marco Bisagno (Chairman of T. Mariotti), and Marco Ghiglione (Vice President of Confindustria Genova responsible for the Port of Genoa and Tigullio). Ghiglione emphasised the economic and employment significance of an industrial cluster that developed around post-war dry docks and continues to evolve continuously.
According to Genova Industrie Navali S.p.A., these findings reflect not only the enduring value of a deeply rooted local industry, but also the ability of a highly specialised supply chain to anticipate future challenges, fostering advanced skills and generating fresh value for the entire region.
